Occupational Therapy
OT is the treatment of clients/patients through the use of daily activities aiming at the client’s maximum functional ability. We work with clients through the life span that is work, school, leisure/play, social skills and activities of daily living. We work with people from birth through to old age. The main focus for OT is prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of disability and restoration of function of the individual.

We work with all kinds of disabilities and conditions namely, but not limited to the following, where we assess, plan, educate and treat the client.
  • Cerebral palsy (CP)
  • Developmental delays
  • Learning disabilities
  • Down’s syndrome
  • Autism
  • CVA (strokes)
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Clubfoot
  • All kinds of hand injuries
  • Neuropathies related to HIV
  • Psychiatric conditions

Requirements to pursue this area
Occupational Therapy is a 4 year BSc Degree course. One can study in most of the South African Universities, it is currently not available for study in the country though. For one to enrol in this profession, you need to have all your sciences as subjects. As an OT, there is so much need out there for this profession and you are guaranteed a job when you graduate. It is a lot of hard work, but also satisfactory and it can be fun to do.
